Tigers Rise to the Top: Three LBHS Wrestlers Headed to CIF State Championships

Los Banos, CA (February 23, 2026) — Los Banos High School will be represented by three student-athletes at the CIF California State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield following strong performances at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament this past weekend.

Angelina Borelli – 1st Place Champion
Luke Borelli – 4th Place
Michael Coelho – 5th Place

Angelina Borelli earned a first-place finish in her weight class, claiming a Masters championship title. Luke Borelli placed fourth, and Michael Coelho secured a fifth-place finish. All three qualified to advance to the state tournament, one of the most competitive high school wrestling events in the country.

In addition to the individual qualifiers, Los Banos High posted notable team finishes in a highly competitive field. The boys team placed 14th overall, while the girls team finished 18th. The Sac-Joaquin Section includes approximately 198 high schools, with only 132 teams qualifying to compete at the Masters Tournament.

“To put this into perspective, California is widely regarded as the toughest high school wrestling state in the nation,” said Larry. “Thousands of athletes begin the season. Only a small percentage advance to Masters. From there, only the top placers move on to the State Championships.”

The Masters Tournament serves as the final qualifying round before the CIF State Championships. Each bracket features elite competition, including league champions, returning state qualifiers, and nationally ranked wrestlers. Advancement at this level is often determined by narrow margins.

“Qualifying for the CIF State Championships represents years of disciplined training, academic responsibility, physical preparation, and mental toughness,” Larry said. “It also reflects the importance of consistent year-round development opportunities, dedicated coaching, supportive families, and a school community that believes in providing students with pathways to excellence.”

The Tigers now travel to Bakersfield to compete on the state’s biggest stage, representing Los Banos High School and the broader community in one of California’s premier high school athletic events.
