Merced County, CA (January 24, 2026) — The California Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s help to identify a dirt bike rider who fled from a traffic stop in Merced County earlier this month.
According to CHP Merced Area, the incident occurred on January 15 at approximately 5:04 p.m. A CHP Central Division sergeant was traveling northbound on Buhach Road when he observed a red dirt bike with a black number “4” traveling southbound.
When the sergeant attempted to conduct an enforcement stop using lights and siren, the rider made an abrupt U-turn and fled the area, escaping into the McSwain area and avoiding apprehension.
CHP is now asking anyone who may recognize the dirt bike or have information about the rider or owner to come forward. Tips can be provided to the CHP Merced Area Office at (209) 356-6600. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through Merced Area Crime Stoppers by calling 1-855-725-2420.
CHP officials emphasized that dirt bikes are not street-legal vehicles and are not designed for use on public roadways. Operating them on streets poses serious safety risks due to limited lighting and visibility, reduced stability on pavement, and an increased risk of severe injury in the event of a collision.
Authorities also warned that evading law enforcement significantly increases the danger to the rider, motorists, and nearby residents, particularly in areas with intersections, driveways, and limited sight lines.
CHP stated it has received multiple complaints about illegal dirt bike activity throughout the area and will continue enforcement efforts to prevent serious injuries or fatalities.
