SANTA NELLA — Merced County officials have released updates regarding the 134 cats found inside a U-Haul van parked near a Taco Bell in Santa Nella on June 29.
According to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, 28 cats were found deceased. The remaining 106 were taken into custody by animal control and transported to the Merced County Animal Shelter and Atwater Veterinary Center for care.
The animals remain under a mandatory 14-day seizure hold, which began following a court hearing on July 2. Officials stated that after this period, each cat will need to be evaluated by a veterinarian before being made available for adoption or foster placement.
The Sheriff’s Animal Services Bureau noted that they have received a high volume of inquiries from the public regarding adoptions and donations. Community members are being asked to wait until the cats are cleared for placement before visiting the shelter.
Those wishing to help can:
- Donate: The shelter has posted an Amazon Wishlist and other donation links to assist with medical and daily care needs.
- Foster or Adopt: Applications will be accepted once the hold period ends and the cats are medically cleared.
- Volunteer: Those interested in volunteering can contact the shelter for more information on how to assist.
To stay informed, residents can follow Merced County Animal Services and the Sheriff’s Office on official social media pages. Inquiries can also be directed to the shelter at (209) 385-7436.
