Only One Dog Remains on Los Banos Animal Shelter Red List as Deadline Nears

On January 20, 2026 by Kara Hernandez

Los Banos, CA (January 20, 2026) — As of Tuesday, only one dog remains on the Red List at the Los Banos Animal Shelter, with an adoption or rescue deadline set for Wednesday, January 21 at 3 p.m., according to shelter officials.

The dog, Rex (Impound #25-1598), is a young Labrador mix who has been housed at the shelter for approximately 26 days. Shelter staff confirmed Rex is not red-listed due to space constraints, but because the shelter environment is beginning to negatively affect his mental well-being. Officials explained that working and high-energy breeds can experience significant stress in a kennel setting, which can eventually impact adoptability if prolonged.

Staff described Rex as a social, affectionate dog who has tested well with other dogs and shows signs of good recall. While he is not aggressive, shelter representatives emphasized that continued stress in a high-noise, high-confinement environment can be especially difficult for young, people-oriented dogs like Rex. They noted that Rex is the type of dog better suited for an active home or working environment rather than extended shelter housing.

The Los Banos Animal Shelter currently does not operate a foster program, meaning dogs on the Red List must be adopted directly or transferred to a rescue organization in order to leave the facility. Shelter officials stated they are actively working with partner shelters that do have foster systems, but a confirmed commitment is required before the deadline.

Community members interested in helping are encouraged to visit the shelter’s Facebook page, submit an adoption application, or contact the shelter directly. Officials stressed that even sharing Rex’s information with rescues or potential adopters can make a difference as the deadline approaches.

Rex’s full profile, including handling and dog test videos, is available through the Los Banos Animal Shelter’s official social media and adoption platforms.

Community members interested in adopting Rex or assisting with a rescue placement are encouraged to contact the Los Banos Animal Shelter directly. Shelter officials advised that inquiries can be made by messaging the shelter through its official Facebook page or by completing the Google adoption interest form below.
