LOS BANOS, CA — On March 28, 2025, the City of Los Banos celebrated the inauguration of a new solar carport at the Los Banos Community Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event marked a significant step toward the city’s commitment to sustainable energy and cost savings.
The solar carport, completed in September 2024, is designed to offset approximately 95% of the Community Center’s energy consumption. This initiative is projected to save the city over $1 million in energy costs over the next 20 years. The system has a capacity of 162 kilowatts, generating enough electricity to power approximately 2,000 homes daily.
The project was made possible through a partnership with Peninsula Clean Energy’s Government Solar Program, which required no upfront costs from the city and utilized union labor for construction.
Local officials, including Mayor Michael Amabile, attended the ceremony to commemorate the project’s completion and highlight its benefits to the community. The event featured speeches from city leaders and representatives from Peninsula Clean Energy, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy initiatives in Los Banos.
The carport not only offers valuable shade and protection for vehicles, but also reflects the City of Los Banos’ consideration of cost-effective and forward-thinking infrastructure solutions. Residents are encouraged to visit the Community Center to view the new installation and learn more about the city’s ongoing sustainability efforts.
