Yesterday, a heart-pounding rescue unfolded in Merced after a desperate plea from a local family led to the dramatic recovery of five abandoned puppies.
The Flores family had discovered the puppies—tiny, trembling, and left in a ditch off a rural road. After calling the county and city with no immediate assistance available, they were referred to the local shelter, who recommended they contact a trusted rescue group known for taking swift action: New Beginnings for Merced County Animals.
“I didn’t know who else to turn to,” said a member of the Flores family. “But within an hour of reaching out, they were there—no hesitation, no delay. It was incredible.”
Rescuers arrived quickly on scene, armed with blankets, crates, and quiet determination. The ditch was steep and partially flooded, with brush hiding the scared pups from view. One by one, the rescuers gently pulled the puppies to safety, their tails tucked and eyes wide with fear. Despite their condition—wet, cold, and hungry—all five were alive.
“The moment we saw their little faces peeking out from the weeds, we knew we had to act fast,” said one rescuer on site. “There’s no time to waste when babies are involved.”
The puppies are now safe, warm, and receiving care thanks to donations from the community and the ongoing support of New Beginnings. They’re expected to make full recoveries and will soon be available for adoption.
