Evangeline “Vangie” Gill Rose, 99, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Modesto, California with her two daughters by her side.
Evangeline was born in Los Banos, California on November 22, 1924 to Manuel and Rosa Gill, the second of six children. She graduated from Los Banos High School in 1943, married George Rose in 1946, and moved to Newman, California. They raised three daughters Arlene, Cecelia (CeCe), and Marie.
Vangie was a lifelong homemaker dedicated to her family, providing delicious, traditional Portuguese and American meals. Her cobblers and pies were everyone’s favorites. She took loving care of her family for decades. She fondly remembered childhood trips to Pismo Beach for clamming and to Santa Cruz for the beach and boardwalk. She enjoyed trips to local casinos to play slot machines. Vangie loved reading, especially biographies. She delighted in playing Pedro with friends and family. She took great pleasure in crocheting and donating many of her afghans to various organizations and fundraisers and made countless costumes for her children and grandchildren including Disney character costumes on numerous occasions. In recent years, Vangie became a huge Golden State Warriors fan and loved watching their games, especially her favorite player, Stephen Curry. Vangie was very devoted to the Catholic faith and a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Altar Society, S.P.R.S.I. (Sociedade Portuguesa Rainha Santa Isabel), and Newman 50 plus Club.
The family would like to acknowledge and extend their sincere gratitude to those very helpful in the time leading up to Vangie’s passing: Jake Avila for his many years of being there for her, caregivers Shelley Nunes and Mary Lou Verissimo for their generous attentiveness, neighbors Mike and Linda LeGate for their frequent visits, check-ins, and treats, the Newman Fire Department and Westside Ambulance, and the nurses on the fifth floor of the South Tower at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
A Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:00 am followed by a Recitation of the Rosary/Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, Monday, February 12th, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman. Interment to follow at Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman.
