UC Merced Men’s Soccer Earns Top 25 Win to Make Early Splash in NCAA Division II, Three Other UC Merced Teams in Action

Merced, CA (September 8 2025) – The University of California, Merced men’s soccer team made an early statement in NCAA Division II with a 1-0 upset win over No. 22 Western Oregon University in the season and NCAA Division II opener on Saturday in Monmouth, Ore.

Omar Garcia scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute off the first career assist from Miguel Serrano. Garcia’s goal was the eighth of his career, fourth game-winning goal. Angel Joaquin was brilliant between the posts making six saves against a Western Oregon team that averaged 2.9 goals per game at home a year ago and made the NCAA Tournament. UC Merced will host Fresno Pacific University in the home opener on Wednesday night.

UC Merced women’s soccer played to a 0-0 draw against Simon Fraser on Friday night at Bobcat Field. Friday night marked UC Merced’s NCAA Division II celebration and UC Merced’s 20th anniversary. Alicia Lepe recorded two saves in the shutout, while Trinidad Quiroz held match-high with six shots. Outside of the game, there was a fanfest, a $5M gift from the Campos Foundation to build Campos Field and fund STEM scholarships for scholar-athletes, and a Fiat Lux drone show.

UC Merced women’s volleyball and men’s water polo were also in action over the weekend. Women’s volleyball beat Menlo College in four sets, but fell to Westmont and Fresno Pacific in straight sets at the Sunbird Classic. Men’s water polo fell 18-13 to Whittier and 17-14 to McKendree at the Rare Air Invitational at the USAFA in Colorado.
