Merced, CA (October 13, 2025) — The last Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event of the year will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 8:00am – 12:00pm at the Merced area landfill in its new Resource and Recovery facility. There is no cost for residents within Merced County to dispose of HHW items, but businesses must contact Clean Harbors at (530) 490-1077 to arrange pre-payment before bringing any material to this event.
This event will be the first held in the new HHW area at the Highway 59 landfill. In order to reach the area, customers should use the Bypass lane as you approach the scalehouse after entering the landfill and then follow the signs with directions to the HHW location. The new HHW area is part of a larger project which combines the drop-off locations of several materials diverted from the landfill at a new Resource and Recovery facility. The entire facility will be opening later this month.
“We are pleased to be able to offer our customers a new place to dispose of their household hazardous waste,” said James Moore, Director of RWA. “The new HHW area, along with the entire Resource and Recovery facility, will enhance the customer experience at the landfill overall by making recycling easier and more efficient.”
Household Hazardous Waste is any household product that contains ingredients that are corrosive, reactive, flammable, and/or toxic. Some common examples of HHW are batteries of any kind, CFL lightbulbs, paint, and used motor oil or filters. Some HHW is accepted at RWA landfills during regular business hours, but some items commonly found in homes that cannot be brought to the landfill at any other time except HHW collection days include pool chemicals, full or partially used aerosol containers, and yard chemicals like pesticides and herbicides. For a complete list of HHW that is accepted at the events, please visit: www.mcrwma.org/31/Household-Hazardous-Waste or call RWA at (209) 723-4481.
Both of RWA’s landfill sites in Merced and Los Banos have recycling and diversion programs for batteries, mattresses, carpet, clothing, tires, e-waste, household hazardous waste and more. Disposal fees apply to most material brought to the landfill, but some recycling programs accept specific items for free or a reduced rate.
