Merced County, CA (September 16, 2025) — A 60-year-old bicyclist from Hilmar was killed late Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle on Bloss Avenue, east of Golf Link Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. on September 11. CHP officers from the Merced Area Office responded to a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. When emergency personnel arrived, they determined that the bicyclist had died at the scene.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the man was riding his bicycle westbound on Bloss Avenue in a low-light area. He had a small red flashing light on the rear of the bicycle and a small flashlight in front. At the same time, a 16-year-old driver from Stevinson, operating a 2015 Infiniti Q50, was traveling westbound at an estimated 60 miles per hour when he approached the cyclist from behind.
For reasons still under investigation, the driver failed to see the cyclist and struck him from the rear. The impact ejected the bicyclist, who landed on the north shoulder of the roadway and sustained fatal injuries.
The teenage driver stopped immediately, called 911, and cooperated with law enforcement. Authorities confirmed the driver was not impaired at the time of the crash.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigating Officer Steven Demoss at (209) 356-6600.
