Atwater, CA (March 9, 2026) — Authorities are investigating after a man was found dead on railroad tracks in Atwater Sunday evening.
According to the Atwater Police Department, officers responded just after 6:00 p.m. Sunday to reports of a possible body on the tracks near Atwater Boulevard toward the train crossing at Packers Street.
Police say the Union Pacific Railroad Company alerted authorities to the discovery.
When officers arrived, they located the body of a man believed to be in his 30s on the tracks.
The discovery prompted the closure of the railroad crossing on Atwater Boulevard at Applegate Road through High Street while investigators worked at the scene. Authorities asked the public to avoid the area during the investigation.
Officials said the Shaffer Street railroad crossing remained open as an alternate route.
Police have not yet released the man’s identity. The circumstances surrounding the death have also not been publicly confirmed.
