Both vehicles engulfed in flames

MERCED, CA — On 10/30/2024, at approximately 0051 hours, Merced Communication Center (MCC) broadcast a call of a head-on crash on Interstate 5 (I-5) southbound north of Volta Road. At approximately 0050 hours, a 2008 Honda and a 2017 Isuzu box truck impacted head-on blocking the southbound lanes Los Banos CHP officers responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, it was determined, the 2008 Honda, was driving northbound at an unknown rate of speed, and for an unknown reason traveled off the paved roadway driving across the dirt/grass center median into the I-5 southbound lanes, before colliding head-on with a 2017 Isuzu box truck. The driver of the Isuzu, was traveling within the southbound lane of I-5 at an unknown speed. After the crash, both vehicles came to rest, blocking both lanes of I-5 southbound. The unknown driver of the Honda (Pending Notification) and unknown driver of the Izuzu (Pending Notification) were pronounced deceased by California Department of Fire personnel at the scene. Both vehicles were completely engulfed in flames. Both vehicles sustained major front end damage as a result of this crash and there were no passengers in either vehicle.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision.
