From Classroom to Kennel: AGS Supports Shelter Pets

On March 3, 2026 by Merced College

Los Banos, CA (March 3, 2026) — Merced College students are stepping beyond campus this month to support animals in need across the region.

The Gamma Tau Chapter of Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), the California Community College honor society, has launched a community-wide Animal Shelter Resource Drive benefiting local shelters in both Merced and Los Banos. The initiative is focused on collecting essential supplies that directly support the health, comfort, and care of animals awaiting adoption.

“Our local shelters work tirelessly with limited resources,” said Teresa Gross, Secretary and Public Relations Officer for the AGS Gamma Tau Chapter. “This drive is a way for students and community members to come together and make a meaningful difference for animals who need care, safety, and a chance at a better life.”

According to AGS, donations will be collected throughout March at designated drop-off locations on both Merced College campuses, including the Los Banos campus. All items gathered will be distributed to partnering animal shelters serving the Merced and Los Banos communities.

Requested donation items include:

  • Dry and canned pet food
  • Pet treats
  • Dog and cat toys
  • Blankets and towels
  • Cleaning supplies such as bleach, detergent, and disinfectant wipes
  • Puppy pads, cat litter, and other essential care items

Community members who wish to participate can drop off donations on campus or coordinate directly with AGS by email at [email protected].

Alpha Gamma Sigma is dedicated to promoting academic excellence, leadership development, and community service within California’s community colleges. Through projects such as this resource drive, the Gamma Tau Chapter continues to expand its service efforts beyond campus and into the broader Los Banos and Merced communities.
