LOS BANOS, CA (AUGUST 1st 2025) — LOS BANOS, CA — Local veterans in need of assistance will find a one-stop hub of support later this month when the community gathers for the 2025 Los Banos Veterans Stand Down. Scheduled for Thursday, August 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hall (615 E Street, Los Banos), this event offers free resources, services, and supplies to veterans facing housing instability, unemployment, or other challenges.

The Stand Down is modeled after military practices where troops are given a secure retreat to rest and recover. In the civilian world, it has become a powerful outreach tool to assist veterans who may be struggling to navigate government benefits or lack access to basic necessities.

Participants will receive free meals, hygiene kits, clothing, health screenings, mental health support, housing referrals, and access to veterans benefit officers (VSOs) who can assist with disability claims, VA enrollment, and pension benefits. Representatives from Merced County Veterans Services, Merced County WorkNet, local shelters, and nonprofit organizations will be present to provide job assistance, counseling, and legal guidance.

While the event is open to all veterans, the primary focus is on those who are unhoused, at risk of homelessness, or experiencing difficulty reintegrating into civilian life. Organizers encourage attendees to bring any documentation they have, but proof of service is not required to receive help.

The Stand Down is supported by local veteran groups including VFW Post #2487, American Legion Post #166, The Los Banos Elks Lodge, and AMVETS, along with volunteers from the City of Los Banos and the surrounding region. Veterans and community members interested in volunteering or donating can contact the Merced County Veterans Services Office for more information.

For many veterans, this event may be the first step toward long-term stability. For the community, it’s an opportunity to give back—one connection at a time.
