Los Banos, CA (December 3, 2025) — A Los Banos nonprofit founded by a local veteran and his wife is opening applications to help disabled veterans with critical home and vehicle repairs. The organization, American Hero Initiative, was created in 2023 by Larry and Maria Phillips after experiencing firsthand how quickly everyday repairs can become overwhelming and financially devastating. Larry, a disabled veteran, and Maria, who serves as executive director, found themselves facing a series of urgent problems — a failing transmission, holes in their ceiling, broken electrical outlets, damaged plumbing, and appliances on the verge of collapse. Even after working hard to rebuild their credit, they were forced to consider new debt just to keep their home livable.
During that difficult period, Larry searched for veteran assistance programs, only to learn that many options were restricted, one-time, or limited to very specific repair criteria. Sitting in their car outside a hobby store, the couple had a conversation that ultimately changed the direction of their lives. If they were struggling despite doing everything they could, how many other veterans were in similar situations with nowhere to turn? That question became the foundation of the American Hero Initiative — a nonprofit built to provide direct financial assistance for home and auto repairs to disabled veterans, easing the burden of unexpected expenses that can impact safety, stability, and employment.
The organization received full 501(c)(3) approval two years ago and has already gained local momentum. American Hero Initiative recently hosted an event celebrating the 250th Marine Corps Birthday, raising $3,200, securing grants, and generating community interest. They participate in street fairs, trunk-or-treats, and local outreach events to connect with contractors, mechanics, and vendors willing to offer free estimates, discounted work, or partnership services. The group is currently approved to operate nationwide but is focusing its efforts on the Central Valley, with Los Banos as its home base and a goal of expanding outreach to Merced.
What sets the nonprofit apart is accessibility. While many assistance programs for veterans require a 75% disability rating or higher, American Hero Initiative offers support beginning at 30% service-connected disability, which opens the door for significantly more applicants. They have already secured help for veterans in need, including providing new tires to ensure a safe vehicle to travel to work and medical appointments. Auto repair funding is one of the most requested services, and the organization notes that vehicle assistance is rarely available through other agencies — making it a central part of their mission.
Funding remains limited, and the organization is actively seeking donors, sponsors, and community partners to expand the number of veterans they can assist. State Assemblymember Adam Gray recently recognized their work with a congressional award, and media attention is slowly growing as more residents learn about the program. Applications are currently open and will remain available until funds run out; however, requests will be kept on file so eligible veterans can be contacted when new funding becomes available.
The application process is straightforward: Veterans submit basic documentation, including a DD-214 and proof of service-connected disability, and the organization evaluates whether the repair poses a health, safety, financial, or livelihood concern. Approved applicants are matched with local contractors or mechanics, and American Hero Initiative pays the repair provider directly once the veteran’s portion of the cost is covered.
Community members are encouraged to support the organization by donating, volunteering, or signing up as contractors willing to provide repairs at reduced cost. Applications, partnership information, and donation options can be found online, and residents can expect to see American Hero Initiative representatives at local events throughout the season.
Applications are now open for eligible veterans until current funds are exhausted.
