A Legacy of Service: Los Banos Veterans Seek to Grow Membership and Preserve Tradition

LOS BANOS, CA — The American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2487 have served the Los Banos community for over a century. But as the needs of local veterans continue to grow, these historic organizations are facing a critical challenge: recruiting the next generation.

Patricia McCoy, a U.S. Air Force veteran and active member of the American Legion, described the reality facing many veteran-led efforts. “I’m about to be 58 years old, and I am probably amongst the younger veterans that are a member of our post,” she said.

That aging membership base affects everything—from providing military funeral honors to running essential community programs.

“We’re running out of people to physically do that,” McCoy said, referring to the honor guards who perform ceremonies for deceased veterans. “That is a respect and an honor that every veteran deserves.”

The Legion and VFW continue working to connect with younger veterans, many of whom may not be aware of the support and advocacy these organizations provide. McCoy noted that the role of these groups extends beyond community service—they serve as an essential voice to state and federal governments, advocating for veterans’ benefits and resources. “These organizations are the voice to our state and federal governments. They fight for veterans’ benefits,” she said.

All veterans are encouraged to visit the Los Banos Veterans Memorial Hall to learn more. McCoy invites those who may not have considered joining to speak with local leaders. “Come and talk to some of the veterans. Talk to the American Legion Commander, the VFW Commander, and learn more so they can see that their voice matters.”

In Los Banos, the American Legion and VFW operate as a united force—unusual among veteran posts nationwide. That collaboration has helped them serve not only veterans but the entire community. The joint group sponsors flag etiquette classes, honors local first responders, co-sponsors a Boy Scout troop, and helps raise funds for Central Valley Honor Flights.

They also operate ongoing fundraisers to sustain operations at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Among them is the Flag Program, where subscribers pay to have a flag placed at their home on eight patriotic holidays. Currently, over 900 flags are placed and retrieved by volunteers each holiday. The commemorative plaque program honors veterans with ties to Los Banos and remains open to both living and deceased service members.

Other fundraisers include raffle ticket sales, Buddy Poppy donations, and $5 parking during the May Day Fair—all of which help maintain the hall and its veteran services.

“Getting the word out is important,” McCoy said. “If you’re a veteran—or you know one—encourage them to come down and learn more.”

Veterans can meet with a Veteran Service Officer at the Los Banos Veterans Memorial Hall on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Thursdays, and the 2nd Wednesday of each month, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
