
Merced, CA (March 2, 2026) — Merced teenager has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at Applegate Park, according to the Merced Police Department.
Police said patrol officers were dispatched to Applegate Park, 1045 W. 25th Street, at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 25, 2026, after receiving a report of shots fired and a male victim struck by gunfire.
Officers arrived within minutes and located a 23-year-old Black male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Officers began life-saving measures until AMR personnel arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.
Merced police said several individuals were present in the park at the time of the shooting, but no other community members were injured.
Detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Through investigative efforts, police said they identified the suspect as Ryan Santos, 18. Police reported Santos was located and arrested on Feb. 26, 2026 in connection with the homicide.
In a separate report citing law enforcement, authorities said investigators were able to use footage from a “blue light” camera to identify a vehicle associated with the incident as part of the investigation.
