Winton, CA (December 12, 2025) — A routine traffic enforcement stop in Merced led to the discovery of a loaded, unregistered firearm early Monday, authorities reported.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers Bounlangsy and Thornton stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Winton Way and Walnut Avenue after observing the driver fail to come to a complete stop at a posted stop sign. During the initial contact, officers noticed a spent shell casing on the passenger floorboard, prompting them to conduct a protective sweep of the vehicle.
Under the driver’s seat, officers located a loaded firearm that was not registered, CHP said. This marks the second instance this month in Merced County where a firearm was found in connection with a stop sign violation, highlighting how even minor traffic infractions can uncover potentially dangerous contraband.
No additional details regarding charges, the driver’s identity, or any reports of drugs were included in the initial CHP release. The investigation remains ongoing.
