Snelling, Calif. On May 16, 2025, at approximately 9:42 am, Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a report of a head-on injury traffic crash in the area of State Route 59 and Snelling Road. Upon arrival to the scene, CHP officers determined this to be a motorcycle versus a pick-up truck, head on crash, with one fatality.
Preliminary investigation determined that a 92-year-old male from Coulterville, CA was driving a 2017 Toyota pick-up truck southbound SR-59, approaching Snelling Road. A 72-year-old male from Hilmar, CA, was riding a 2000 Honda motorcycle northbound on SR-59, approaching Snelling Road at approximately 55 mph. As the 92-year-old approached Snelling Road, he slowed down and for unknown reasons, made an unsafe left turn directly in the path of the motorcyclist. The front of the pick-up truck collided head on with the motorcycle. The 72-year-old was ejected from the motorcycle and unfortunately sustained fatal injuries. The 92-year-old sustained major injuries and was transported by air to Doctors Medical Center, Modesto CA. The rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The cause for the crash is still under investigation and alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this traffic crash.
