Services Announced for Lupita Lizbeth Zúñiga Ontiveros

Gustine, CA (February 17, 2026) — Authorities and family members have confirmed the recovery and death of Lupita Lizbeth Zúñiga Ontiveros, the 21-year-old Stockton mother who went missing after a dune buggy crash in Merced County on January 28, 2026.

According to law enforcement, the off-road vehicle Lupita was riding in entered the Delta-Mendota Canal near State Route 140 and Gravel Pit Road shortly after midnight. Three other occupants were able to escape the water. Lupita did not resurface.

The case prompted extensive search efforts, including hundreds of community volunteers who searched along the canal and surrounding farmland for weeks.

Family members confirmed that Lupita has since been recovered. Law enforcement also confirmed her death.

Throughout the search, relatives described Lupita as devoted to her 18-month-old daughter and deeply connected to her family. Community members from across the Central Valley joined daily search efforts, drawing regional and national attention to the case.

Funeral services have now been scheduled.

A viewing will be held at In the Ranch, 4701 E. Collier Road in Acampo, California, on Friday, February 20, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Burial services will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at Cherokee Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 13951 N. Beckman Road in Lodi, California.

The family has expressed appreciation for the volunteers, first responders, and community members who supported them during the search.
