Merced Police Address Social Media Rumors, Say Schools Have No ICE Presence

On January 22, 2026 by Los Banos Police Department

Merced, CA (January 22, 2026) — Merced Police released the following statement this week on social media.

“We want to address rumors circulating on social media regarding the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at local schools. The school district has confirmed these claims are FALSE. There is NO ICE presence at any MCSD & MUHSD school sites.

Our department supports MCSD & MUHSD in reassuring families that students are safe and protected while at school. Schools remain a place for learning, not immigration enforcement. The school district also reaffirms their commitment to the privacy and safety of all students and families. We appreciate the community’s trust and encourage everyone to rely on official sources for accurate information.”

In addition to this release, in a separate post sharing their activity in December, the Merced Police Department also stated,

“The Merced Police Department is committed to serving everyone in our city with fairness, dignity, and respect. We want every person to feel safe contacting us, whether to report a crime, ask for help, or serve as a witness. Your immigration status will never be questioned when you seek assistance from our officers.

In accordance with California’s SB 54 (California Values Act), our focus is public safety, not immigration enforcement. Officers do not inquire about immigration status unless legally required by a judicial order or in cases involving serious criminal activity.

We believe trust and collaboration are essential to long-term safety. By maintaining open communication, strengthening community partnerships, and continuing both enforcement and prevention efforts, we are working to make Merced a safer place to live, work, and visit.”
