Merced Man Arrested After 20 Malnourished Animals Seized in Animal Neglect Investigation

Merced, CA (January 16, 2026) — Merced County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services officers responded to a residence in the 5200 block of Utah Street on Tuesday afternoon after receiving a report of possible animal neglect.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Animal Control Officers arrived at the location at approximately 3:45 p.m. and found two horses, six adult dogs, and 12 puppies on the property. Authorities stated that all of the animals appeared malnourished and emaciated at the time of the response.

Animal Control Officers seized all 20 animals from the property. Officials confirmed that each animal was transported and provided medical care by a licensed veterinarian following the seizure. Authorities stated that all of the animals remain under veterinary care as they continue to receive treatment and evaluation. Animal Services officials said that, once legally cleared, the animals may be placed with rescue organizations or made available for adoption, and that updates will be released as the case progresses.

Deputies arrested the animal’s owner, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as 34-year-old Ricardo Fontes of Merced. Fontes was booked into the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Jail on eight felony counts of animal cruelty, authorities said.
